In a surprise development, the world’s biggest travel market is projected to shrink this year. Has the United States rolled up the welcome mat?

Travelers are staying away from the United States in a big way.

New data show cross-border trips from Canada — America’s largest source of inbound tourism — plummeted in August, continuing a months-long decline.

At the same time, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) projects that the United States will be the only major destination among 184 countries to see a drop in foreign visitor spending this year.

The loss? An estimated $12.5 billion.
