In this episode: We discover a place that has transformed from earthquake-stricken city to an “AutoCAD chic” destination. Oh, and there's food—and flowers!
I would agree, Christchurch is a very interesting City. I'm not always interested in museums but the ChristChurch Earthquake museum is worth seeing. It shows the resilience and compassion of the New Zealand people. I didn't make it to the Antarctica Center looks very interesting, too.
So many interesting places to eat and walk around. I love how the river meanders through the City Centre.
Always glad to see you and the family are enjoying roaming the world.
I was fortunate to spend a couple months in CHCH in the spring of ‘79 and ‘80. It was a wonderful time. Really got spoiled with the Fish ‘n Chips and the butter. Used to freeze 20kg cases and fly them home. Goal was to get it in the freezer before it melted.
Most boring stop was Pago Pago. Couldn’t leave the airport. But the old airport diner had great banana fritters.
Years ago, we were in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. The first morning, I asked the woman at the front desk if we could book a half day tour. The woman looked at me, perplexed, and said, "Madam, we have no tourism in Brunei." Bored after a few hours, we walked to the palace and asked if we could meet the Sultan. That was denied with much head shaking, and a stream of words we did not understand. Probably more tourism now, but that was a mind numbing few days, broken only by the television coming on at full volume with calls to prayer.
I visited in 2005 before Christchurch was destroyed. Has the Cathedral ben rebuilt?
Not yet. They're still working on it.

The river was one of our favorite parts, too.
